Mandate
ENSREG WG2 – Safety of radioactive waste management, spent fuel and decommissioning – was set up to advise and assist the European Commission, at its own initiative or at the request of the Commission, to gradually develop a common understanding and further common approaches in priority fields related to the safety of the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste and transparency.
WG2 supports ENSREG in its role of providing strategic advice to the Commission on the safety of radioactive waste management, spent fuel and decommissioning. It reports directly to ENSREG.
Main tasks and activities
WG2 contributes to a range of ENSREG activities, shaped largely by the Radioactive Waste Directive. WG2’s specific tasks, along with clear deliverables and milestones, are specified in the ENSREG work programme. Recently, WG2 has focused on:
- workshop on lessons learned and the assessment of remaining challenges after 10 years of implementation of the Radioactive Waste Directive
- workshop on national and international experiences in the management of radioactive waste from medical applications
- a technical position on waste classification
Membership and operation
The group is chaired by ENSREG member Mr M. Demarche, ONDRAF-NIRAS Director-General. Each EU country and the Commission can nominate up to 2 members to WG2. These members have expertise relevant for the group’s focus on the safe management of radioactive waste and spent fuel. Other European countries and international organisations may be invited as observers to WG2.
The WG2 meetings usually take place twice a year. Its discussions aim to be based on consensus.
