ENSREG plays a central role in:
- creating an environment in which nuclear safety and the safe management of radioactive waste are continuously improved,
- cultivating consensus and shared understanding in these critical areas, and
- promoting a high-level of transparency and timely information to the public in these fields.
ENSREG goals are to:
- Improve coordination and collaboration among EU Member States in the areas of nuclear safety and the management of radioactive waste.
- Ensure clear information on nuclear safety and the management of radioactive waste.
- Advise the European Commission in drawing up Euratom legislation and strengthening EU nuclear safety standards.
ENSREG Legal Basis
The European Council of 8/9 March 2007 endorsed the Commission proposal to set up an EU High Level Group on Nuclear Safety and Waste Management, with the mandate of progressively developing a structured approach to regulatory cooperation, including new European rules, in these fields.
Taking into account the conclusions of the 2798th meeting of the Council of the European Union (Economic and Financial Affairs) of 8 May 2007, this political commitment was followed up in July 2007 by the Commission Decision 2007/530/Euratom, which formally created ENSREG, defining its composition, tasks, and procedures, including peer reviews and transparency mechanisms.
